The Theory Of A Proper Golf Swing

In theory, a proper golf swing is just a swing of the club that results in the ball landing exactly in the place, where you want it to be. In practice, things are a lot different, since otherwise each golfer would easily be able to match up to Tiger Woods. But, the important point to note is that, if your theory is right, then at least you have a better chance to convert your swing into the perfect one. A proper swing is critical, since it could even determine the end-result of the game.

A proper golf swing starts with a proper warm up. The human body needs to be warmed up with a proper exercise routine. This will increase the flexibility required for the body to twist and will also increase the power needed for a successful swing. Special care needs to be taken to warm up the back, the shoulders and the arm muscles. While theory is all in the mind, it also requires the support of a fit body to pull off a proper swing.

Mental preparation is equally important for a proper swing. You need to convince yourself first, that you can swing the club or driver in the perfect manner to attain the proper swing. You should also be able to isolate your mind from any distractions that could interrupt your body from executing a proper swing. You should make it a point to sit back and think about your best shots on a regular basis. This is the reason most people take up golf and sometimes it pays off to dwell into the past, in order to improve the future.

The proper swing starts right from the stance and continues through the backswing, the downswing and the follow through. A proper stance with legs slightly apart, slightly bent knees, straight hands and a firm grip are essential for a proper swing. While executing a backswing, ensure that you also twist your upper body at the hips. If you are right-handed, then your left hand should remain straight, while your right hand should bend to around 90 degrees. Your club should be raised to your shoulder level, depending on the distance you want the ball to travel.

This should be followed by a smooth and swift downswing. You should use the weight of your body to assist the downswing. Twist your body to the opposite direction of the backswing and strike the ball squarely with the center of the club head. A perfect strike is essential in converting your thoughts into action, since a sliced or a skewed shot will result in the ball flying off in an unwanted direction. A proper grip should ensure that the face of your club head remains constant throughout the downswing. A proper technique is more important than brute strength.

Another ignored aspect after the downswing is the follow through. You should let your club follow the fluid motion of your downswing. The follow through is an important factor to determine the direction and distance of the travel of the ball. The entire motion from backswing to follow through should not be jerky, but instead should be one single fluid motion, where all your energy is concentrated at the tip of your club head.

Remember to store the above theory in your mind, when you pick up the golf club. The right mixture of mental and physical effort should result in a proper swing. If your theoretical knowledge is perfect, then a regimen of regular practice will enable you to converge towards that elusive perfect swing.
